Bathing and Hygiene on Shabbat
Bathroom CleanlinessIt is prohibited to cut toilet paper on Shabbat, and therefore it is necessary to prepare sufficient quantities of cut toilet paper for Shabbat, or to buy tissues or precut toilet paper. If one forgot to ensure that he has tissues or cut paper, or it all ran out and he cannot obtain any more or any substitute, he may cut toilet paper from an ordinary roll for immediate use, but should cut it not along the perforated lines. This dispensation is due to concern for human dignity.
It is permitted to clean a toilet with a rubber or plastic brush, as these do not absorb liquids, and therefore there is no concern regarding the labor of squeezing. Furthermore, one may use cleaning fluid in the toilet during Shabbat. There is no problem with placing an air freshener in the bathroom on Shabbat, or with using an air freshener spray to dispel a foul odor.
On Shabbat, it is prohibited to use a toilet with an electronic eye that causes the toilet to flush automatically. Those who have no other solution should consult a rabbi.
