Bathing and Hygiene on Shabbat

Cosmetics and Skin Care

As a rule, it is prohibited to apply makeup on Shabbat. In recent years, various types of cosmetics have been developed that purport to be permissible for use on Shabbat. One should consult a rabbi before using any particular product.

One may not apply lipstick or nail polish (colored or transparent) on Shabbat. One should not remove nail polish on Shabbat with a piece of cotton or the like to which one has applied a liquid. It is prohibited to trim nails on Shabbat, whether by hand, with scissors, with another implement, or even with one’s teeth. Therefore, manicures are prohibited on Shabbat.

Applying ointment of any kind, whether hand cream, body cream, or face cream, is generally prohibited. Nevertheless, a person suffering from a skin condition should consult a rabbi regarding the possibility of using cream or ointment in such circumstances.
