The Week after the Wedding
The Seven DaysThe wedding day is included in the seven days of feasting. If the ceremony was held even a few moments before sunset, this short period of time is considered the first day, which is followed by six more days of rejoicing and festivity.
During these seven days, when the groom is in the synagogue, the entire congregation omits the Tahanun prayer, which is not recited on days of rejoicing.
Further reading: For more on Tahanun, see p. 492.
The seven days of rejoicing are observed in celebration of the bride’s first marriage. If it is the groom’s first marriage but the bride’s second marriage, some sources indicate that three days of rejoicing are observed while others indicate that the full seven days are observed. If it is the second marriage for both, only three days of rejoicing are observed, during which the bride and groom wear festive clothing and do not go to work.
