The Funeral and Burial
BurialThe deceased is buried face up and with his hands at his sides. In Israel, members of the hevra kadisha place the deceased into the grave. Cinder blocks are then placed on a ledge covering the deceased so that he is surrounded by airspace rather than in the dirt. After the tomb cavity is sealed with the blocks, the grave is then filled in with dirt. It is a mitzva to participate in the burial, and therefore those in attendance will customarily help with shoveling the dirt. While doing so, the shovel is not transferred from one hand to another, but rather the one who has finished shoveling puts it down for the next one to pick it up and continue shoveling.
At the end of the burial, a prayer known as the Justification of the Decree [Tzidduk HaDin], is recited, which is an expression of one’s acceptance of God’s decision. There are different versions of this prayer for Ashkenazim and Sephardim:
Ashkenazim say:
הַצּוּר תָּמִים פָּעֳלוֹ כִּי כָל דְּרָכָיו מִשְׁפָּט, אֵל אֱמוּנָה וְאֵין עָוֶל צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא. הַצּוּר תָּמִים בְּכָל פֹּעַל, מִי יֹאמַר לוֹ מַה תִּפְעַל, הַשַּׁלִּיט בְּמַטָּה וּבְמַעַל, מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה, מוֹרִיד שְׁאוֹל וַיָּעַל. הַצּוּר תָּמִים בְּכָל מַעֲשֶׂה, מִי יֹאמַר לוֹ מַה תַּעֲשֶׂה, הָאוֹמֵר וְעוֹשֶׂה, חֶסֶד חִנָּם לָנוּ תַּעֲשֶׂה, וּבִזְכוּת הַנֶּעֱקַד כְּשֶׂה, הַקְשִׁיבָה וַעֲשֵׂה.

Dayan ha’emet, shofet tzedek ve’emet, barukh dayan ha’emet, ki khol mishpatav tzedek ve’emet. “The rock, His actions are perfect, as all His ways are justice; a faithful God and there is no injustice, righteous and upright is He” (Deuteronomy 32:4). The rock, perfect in every action, who can tell Him what to do? He rules below and above, brings death and gives life, brings down to the grave and raises up. The rock, perfect in every deed, who can tell Him what to do? You who declares and acts [accordingly], perform undeserved kindness with us; and in the merit of the one [Isaac] who was bound like a lamb, hearken and act.
“Righteous in all His ways, the perfect rock, slow to anger and full of mercy, please take pity and please spare parents and children, for Yours, Lord, are forgiveness and mercy. Righteous are You, Lord, to bring death and give life, as in Your hand all spirits are entrusted. Far be it from You to erase our remembrance. Let Your eyes please be open for us with mercy, for Yours, Lord, are mercy and forgiveness. Man, whether he is one year old, or whether he lives a thousand years, what did he gain? He is as though he had never been. Blessed be the true Judge, who brings death and gives life.
“Blessed is He, for His judgment is true; He examines everything with His eye, and He repays man according to his account and his sentence, and all give thanksgiving to His name. We know, Lord, that Your judgment is righteous, You are justified in Your word and vindicated in Your judgments, and none may doubt the method of Your judgment. Righteous are You, Lord, and Your judgments are fair, the true Judge, judging with righteousness and truth. Blessed be the true Judge, for all of His judgments are righteous and true. The soul of all the living is in Your hand, Your right hand and Your [left] hand are full of righteousness. Have mercy on the remnant of the flock of Your servants, and say to the angel [of death]: Hold back your hand.”
Some add these verses:

Gedol ha’etza verav ha’aliliya, asher einekha pekuĥot al kol darkhei venei adam, latet le’ish kidrakhav vekhifri ma’alalav. Lehagid ki yashar Adonai, tzuri velo avlata bo. Adonai natan, vadonai lakaĥ, yehi shem Adonai mevorakh. Vehu raĥum yekhaper avon velo yashĥit, vehirba lehashiv apo, velo ya’ir kol ĥamato.
“He is great in design and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open upon all the ways of men, to give each man in accordance with his ways and in accordance with the fruit of his actions” (Jeremiah 32:19). “To tell that the Lord is upright. He is my rock, and there is no wrongdoing in Him” (Psalms 92:16). “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken, blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). “Yet He, being merciful, forgives iniquity and does not destroy. He has repeatedly restrained His anger and does not kindle all of His wrath” (Psalms 78:38).
Sephardim say:
צַדִּיק אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי, וְיָשָׁר מִשְׁפָּטֶיךָ. צַדִּיק אֲדֹנָי בְּכָל דְּרָכָיו, וְחָסִיד בְּכָל מַעֲשָׂיו. צִדְקָתְךָ צֶדֶק לְעוֹלָם, וְתוֹרָתְךָ אֱמֶת. מִשְׁפְּטֵי אֲדֹנָי אֱמֶת, צָדְקוּ יַחְדָּו. בַּאֲשֶׁר דְּבַר מֶלֶךְ שִׁלְטוֹן, וּמִי יֹאמַר לוֹ מַה תַּעֲשֶׂה.

Yiĥyu metekha nevelati yekumun, hakitzu veranenu shokhenei afar ki tal orot talekha, va’aretz refa’im tapil. Vehu raĥum yekhaper avon velo yashĥit, vehirba lehashiv apo, velo ya’ir kol ĥamato. Adonai hoshi’a, hemelekh ya’anenu veyom korenu.
“Righteous are You, Lord, and upright are Your judgments” (Psalms 119:137). “Just is the Lord in all His ways, and kind in all His deeds” (Psalms 145:17). “Your righteousness is eternal. Your teaching is truth” (Psalms 119:142). “The judgments of the Lord are true and altogether righteous” (Psalms 19:10). “Since governance is by the king’s word, and who will say to him: What are you doing?” (Ecclesiastes 8:4).
“He is of one mind, and who can respond to Him? His soul desires and He does” (Job 23:13). “Small or great, he is there [in the grave], and the slave is free from his master” (Job 3:19). “Behold, He does not trust His servants, and to His angels He attributes misconduct” (Job 4:18). “How much less so man, a maggot; the son of man, a worm” (Job 25:6). “The rock, His actions are perfect, as all His ways are justice; a faithful God and there is no injustice, righteous and upright is He” (Deuteronomy 32:4). “He will eliminate death forever and the Lord God will wipe tears from all faces, and He will remove the disgrace of His people from upon the entire earth, for the Lord has spoken” (Isaiah 25:8). “Your dead will live, my corpses will rise; awaken and sing, dwellers of the dust, for the dew of light is Your dew and You will cause the spirits to fall to the earth” (Isaiah 26:19). “Yet He, being merciful, forgives iniquity and does not destroy. He has repeatedly restrained His anger and does not kindle all of His wrath” (Psalms 78:38). “Deliver us, Lord. The King will answer us on the day we call” (Psalms 20:10).
After the Tzidduk HaDin prayer, the “Great Kaddish” is recited. This is a special, expanded version of the Kaddish that is said on special occasions. The following are two formulas of this Kaddish:
Ashkenazim say:
האבלים: יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא.

Mourner: “in the world that He will renew in the future, [when] He will revive the dead and raise them to eternal life, and build the city of Jerusalem and perfect His Sanctuary within it, and uproot idolatry from the land, and restore the divine service to its place, and the Holy One, blessed be He, will reign in His kingdom and in His glory (those who pray in Nusah Sefarad add: and bring forth His redemption and hasten the coming of His messiah.”
Mourner: “in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of all the house of Israel, swiftly and soon, and say: Amen.”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Congregation and mourner: “May His great name be blessed forever and for all time.”
Mourner: “Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, raised and honored, uplifted and lauded, be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,”

Mourner: “beyond (in the Ten Days of Repentance: far beyond) all the blessings, songs, praises, and consolations that are spoken in the world, and say: Amen.”

Mourner takes three steps backward and says: “May He who makes peace (during the Ten Days of Repentance: the peace) in His high place make peace for us and all Israel, and say: Amen.”

Sephardim say:

Mourner: le’ela min kol birkhata veshirata tushbeĥata veneĥemata, da’amiran be’a’lema ve’imru, Amen.

The mourner takes three steps backward and says: Oseh shalom bimromav, Hu beraĥamav ya’aseh shalom aleinu, ve’al kol Yisrael, ve’imru amen.

Mourner: “May His great name be exalted and sanctified,”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Mourner: “in the world that He will renew in the future, [when] He will revive the dead and raise them to eternal life, and build the city of Jerusalem and perfect His Sanctuary within it, and uproot idolatry from the land, and restore the divine service to its place, and the Holy One, blessed be He, will reign in His kingdom and in His glory, and bring forth His redemption and hasten the coming of His messiah,”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Mourner: “in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of all the house of Israel, swiftly and soon, and say: Amen.”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Congregation and mourner: “May His great name be blessed forever and for all time.”
Mourner: “Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, raised and honored, uplifted and lauded, be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Mourner: “beyond all blessings, songs, praises, and consolations that are spoken in the world, and say: Amen.”
Congregation: “Amen.”
Mourner: “May there be abundant peace from Heaven, life and contentment, salvation and consolation, and help and healing, and redemption and forgiveness and atonement, and relief and deliverance, for us and for all His nation Israel, and say: Amen.”
The congregation responds: “Amen.”
The mourner takes three steps backward and says: “May He who makes peace in His high place, in His mercy make peace for us and all Israel, and say: Amen.”

On joyous days when the Tahanun prayer is not recited, one does not say the Tzidduk HaDin prayer. Psalm 16 is recited instead, followed by a regular Kaddish, not the Great Kaddish.
After the Tzidduk HaDin prayer, Sephardim say the Ashkava prayer and Ashkenazim say the El Malei Raĥamim prayer, while others do not recite these prayers at the funeral, but only later, at the end of the seven days of mourning [shiva].
